How Do I Make the Move?
No longer is a single tool the way to ensure employment. While in the past, a single authoring tool, such as FrameMaker or Interleaf would have ensured you a job, now there are a plethora of tools that must be understood. Whether XML or content management or Web design; whether DTDs or information types or JavaScripts; there are many tools and concepts that must be mastered. But the common denominator is Web tools — whether Web pages or Wikis or blogs; whether designing the user interface or usability or the underlying structure — the Web is where the action is.If you are working in an area with unstructured information, with a focus on document templates, then find a way to move to information types and structured information. Move toward work that separates content from presentation, recognizing that both are critical for communication, but that both are separate areas of expertise and separate tools exist to handle these.
