Nintendo gave gamers attending the 2010 E3 Expo a glimpse of this new device, allowing a handful of fortunate fans to play a game on the new system. Many people believed that the announcement overshadowed the release of the widely popular Nintendo DS XL handheld system, and this caused controversy. Several folks believe that Nintendo made the announcement since most felt the international media would potentially spoil the surprise for North American gaming fans.

No special glasses will be necessary for use with the new d-D system because it will include a new technology referred to as auto stereoscopy. This new technology will eventually be used on different 3-D televisions and movie theaters in the new future as well. This system will be released in Japan first, as it is tentatively scheduled for a February 26, 2011 release in the country. Currently, there has been no officially announced date for the system in North America, other than a possible March 2011 time frame.

According to a press conference held this past September, games like Kid Icarus: Uprising, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D, Assassins Creed: Lost Legacy, Resident Evil: Revelations, Super Street Fighter 4: 3D Edition, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 3DS and a few other titles have been announced for the system. Also at this time, there has been no mention of any free 3ds games or demos that will be made to this who purchase the system. This new handheld system will also provide backwards compatibility, so other Nintendo DS related games will be available to play on the new handheld unit.

The Nintendo 3DS can serve several purposes, not only limited to 3D video games but extending to 3D movies as well. Presently at the E3 Expo, Nintendo has shown films like 'How to train your Dragon', 'Legend of the Guardian', 'The owls of Ga'Hoole' and 'Tangled' in their system as it signed deals with several movie companies. The 3DS is the fifth iteration of Nintendo's DS handheld gaming system.

The technological leaps from the original Gameboy are astounding. Now Nintendo will have the first ever portable 3D handheld gaming system when the highly anticipated Nintendo 3DS hits shelves in 2011. There will be a new top handheld gaming system dominating the gaming market in the future when Christmas 2011 hits, whether gaming fans get a free 3ds or they have to purchase one.
