Adult Educator Code of Ethics
Print
This article is an attempt to arrive at a draft of a code of ethics for adult educators. If you are a professional adult educator, please contribute your thoughts. If you register (which is free) you can edit this article.

Background

Part of becoming a mature profession is the development of a consensus on the body of knowledge and on a code of ethics. The profession of adult education is distinct in its mission and requires a unique code of ethics. Rather than waiting for a self-appointed expert to declare a fully formed code, adult educators around the world can contribute to this code.

The professional adult educator pledges to protect public sovereignty over public education and private control of private education.
1. The professional adult educator has a responsibility to the community and society.

Outstanding Questions

  • how about student/instructor relationships?
  • course content?
  • past, present, and future of teaching would have to be considered
  • something in there that would relate to what we can teach

Other notes:

treat everyone the same equality
honesty
loyalty
integrity
commitment to learning
respect all respect between teacher and student include cultural connections
consider all external and internal factors culture, integrity, feelings, outside influence
In terms of student/instructor relationships, they should be professional, I would look at formal education organizations as a model
